Israel has announced that it plans to boost its U.S.-funded Iron Dome missile interceptor system by adding a fifth battery, though officials have not yet indicated its planned location, Reuters reported.
Israeli officials indicated that the system’s success to date in shooting down Palestinian rockets fired from Gaza accounts for the new upgrade.
A Defense Ministry statement said the new battery, which would be installed “within a short time,” would help Israel confront “a variety of unprecedented threats.”
In fiscal year 2011, Congress overwhelmingly approved $205 million in funding for the Iron Dome.
