David Horovitz Addresses Hill Staff on New Israeli Government

David Horovitz, founding editor ofThe Times of Israel and former editor-in-chief of The Jerusalem Post, addressed some 30 congressional staffers via conference call about the implications of the new Israeli government.

Horovitz said the new government aims primarily to address key domestic issues that coalition politics have rendered impossible until now, including the haredi exemption from army service.

At the same time, Horovitz noted, the new broad-based government may lead the United States to expect Israel to make greater efforts to reach an agreement with the Palestinians, since right-leaning parties no longer have the ability to topple the government single-handedly.

He also pointed out that the government’s newfound strength makes it highly likely that it will complete its term until the 2013 elections.
